Scripture: Genesis chapters 12 and 13
It was perhaps the best job I’ve ever had. A middle level management position with a big organization and the prospects of moving up the management ladder were high. I had no intention of looking for another job or working for another organization. I knew the calling of God was upon my life, but I thought I would continue to work there until the Lord made His plan plain to me. All of a sudden, the environment at work changed and it dawned on me my job was in jeopardy. At that point I started to pray more. I also fasted and had other people praying for me. I could not entertain the thoughts of losing the job, but the Lord knew it was time to move forward. I eventually lost the job and just about a week after losing the job, the Lord spoke to me again about writing a book. You see, I had wanted to write a book for a while but I had no time, I had a full time job. Since I was busy pursuing another degree and since I have a family (wife and two boys – ages 4 and 2 at the time), I was just too busy to listen to God. The job was a distraction in my life and I did not realize it. It was a “Lot”.
Genesis 12:1 says, The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. The instruction was specific: Leave your country, people, father’s household and go to the land I will show you. Even though Abram was determined to honor God by obeying these instructions, he was weak with dealing with the issue of Lot, his nephew. Without any invitation Lot was determined to go with Abram anywhere he went. Gen 12:4 says, So Abram left as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him (emphasis mine). On another occasion in Genesis 13:1, the Bible says, So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him (emphasis mine). Problems will readily come into you life even without any invitation.
Abram loved Lot and did not know that Lot was hindering his relationship with God. Eventually, Abram began to lose his peace over Lot as quarrelling ensued between Lot’s herdsmen and his.
Enough is enough declared Abram. He decided that it was time for them to part ways and he saw to it. Gen 13:14-15 says, The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring for ever. There was no record that the Lord spoke with Abram since he left Egypt until now. You see, “Lot” is a representation of that particular thing you are attached to but is hindering your relationship with God. It is,
– That which causes strife
– That which looks at things from human perspective
– That which cannot make up his mind – In Gen 12:10 when Abram went down to Egypt Lot went with him. In Gen 13:1 When Abram went up from Egypt, Lot also went with him. Lot cannot make up his mind on anything.
– That which pitches his tent toward Sodom. Sodom is a city filled with sins, a place of wickedness and a place of bondage.
– Lot is that which is reluctant to come out of Sodom (Gen 19: 18-22).
Note that if you don’t deal with your “Lot” it will soon become an obstacle to your receiving from God. Your Lot may be a habit, a partner in a relationship, or a job. Whatsoever it is, I admonish you in Christ Jesus’ name to let go of that “Lot”. It has hindered you long enough and you need to hear from God once again.
Prayer:
– Every “Lot” hindering my relationship with God, I break your hold over me and I command you to leave in Jesus’ name.
– Every problem that I’ve invited into my life, I command you to leave now in Jesus’ name.
– Heavenly father, bring a separation between me and my “Lot” now in Jesus’ name.
– Father, let me hear from you from now on. The voice of the enemy I shall not hear in the name of Jesus.
– Make me a blessing oh Lord to the world around me in Jesus’ name.
